What is Pickleball? A Fun and Fast-Growing Paddle Sport
💡BITE-SIZED FACT
Pickleball is a fun and accessible paddle sport, combining elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis, perfect for players of all ages and abilities to enjoy a social and active workout.
Pickleball is a rapidly growing paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net, it’s enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels due to its accessibility and engaging gameplay.
Basic Gameplay
PLAYERS
Two or four players (singles or doubles) use solid-faced paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball over a net.
COURT
The court measures 44 feet long by 20 feet wide, similar to a doubles badminton court. It features a net 34 inches high at the center and 36 inches at the sides.
SCORING
Points are scored when the opposing team fails to return the ball or commits a fault, similar to tennis. Games are typically played to 11 points, win by two.
Unique Features
Non-volley zone
A 7-foot area on each side of the net called the “kitchen” where players cannot volley the ball (hit it in the air without it bouncing first). This unique rule adds a strategic element and encourages softer play near the net.
Under-hand Serve
Serves must be underhand, promoting a slower start to rallies and making the game more accessible for beginners.
Social & Inclusive
Pickleball is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, making it a great choice for socializing and staying active with friends and family.
The Humble Origins and Meteoric Rise of Pickleball
Origins and Popularity:
- Invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, pickleball has grown significantly in recent years, becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States.
- The sport is gaining international recognition as well, with dedicated courts popping up across Europe and Asia.
Pickleball boasts a surprisingly unassuming origin story. In 1965, on Bainbridge Island, Washington, Joel Pritchard and friends were looking for a backyard activity and improvised a game using a badminton court, modified tennis net, paddles, and a perforated plastic ball. Their dog, Pickles, often interfered, hence the name “pickleball.”
Despite the unorthodox beginnings, pickleball gradually found its niche. The sport gained traction in the Pacific Northwest, particularly among seniors who enjoyed its gentler pace compared to tennis. It found further momentum with its inclusion in the 2001 Arizona Senior Olympics, drawing a record number of players.
Factors that contributed to pickleball’s recent explosion in popularity:
Accessibility
The sport is relatively easy to learn, requiring minimal equipment and offering a slower pace due to the underhand serve and non-volley zone. This makes it ideal for all ages and abilities.
Easy to Play
Pickleball fosters a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, making it perfect for socializing and connecting with others. It’s common to see communities organize open play sessions and tournaments, further fostering a sense of belonging.
Health Benefits
Pickleball provides a full-body workout, improving cardiovascular health, agility, and coordination. The social aspect adds a mental and emotional boost, making it an enjoyable way to stay active and connected.
Media Attention
Growing media coverage and endorsements by celebrities have further fueled interest, attracting new players and showcasing the sport’s appeal.
